Meet Patrick McHenry, a Distinguished Fellow at the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy. Prior to joining the Psaros Center, McHenry served 10 terms in the U.S. House of Representatives where he was a member of the House Financial Services Committee, including serving as its lead Republican member and chairman from 2018 to 2024.
During his time in Congress, McHenry drove a robust legislative agenda focused on cryptocurrency, capital formation, artificial intelligence, fintech, data privacy, and corporate governance issues, among other topics. In an interview with McHenry, Psaros FinPolicy Scholar Siona Mondal asked for his thoughts on the U.S.’s current position in the global landscape in regards to innovation.
“The private sector is evolving rapidly, which forces governments to adapt their regulations. At the same time, we’re facing intense global competition,” McHenry shared. “For example, in digital assets, places like Japan, Singapore, Abu Dhabi, and Europe are ahead of the United States in regulatory clarity. The U.S. is now playing catch-up. In other areas, we maintain a lead, but the global landscape is shifting quickly.”
