On Saturday, August 17, and Tuesday, August 20, the Psaros Center for Financial Markets and Policy partnered with the McDonough School of Business’s MBA program to host a Lecture and Discussion session with Jamil Mahuad, former President of Ecuador who shared his insights from his time in office and his extensive academic and diplomatic career.
Mr. Mahuad, who served as President of Ecuador from 1998 to 2000, shared his reflections on several defining moments during his presidency. Mr. Mahuad spoke about the historic Peace Treaty with Peru in 1998, for which he was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He also discussed the economic circumstances around the implementation of dollarization in Ecuador, an economic reform aimed to stabilize the nation’s economy amidst crisis. He detailed the challenges and negotiations involved with the IMF and World Bank during critical moments of economic reform.
The discussion and question and answer period provided students with a unique opportunity to learn about the complexities of leadership, diplomacy, and economic policy from a leader who has navigated these challenges firsthand.
