Georgetown University McDonough School of Business Diversity Programs


Launched in August 2013, the McDonough School of Business’ Business Undergraduates Invested in Leadership and Development (BUILD) program offers an intensive academic and leadership development opportunity for incoming business students who have not previously studied calculus, statistics, or economics. Before classes formally begin, BUILD participants engage in interactive instructional experiences in the areas of accounting, finance, marketing, and international business. Students also meet executives and alumni leaders in local, top-tier corporations and engage in meaningful interactions with Georgetown McDonough faculty. Alumni and upperclassmen mentor BUILD students to provide an important, accessible source of support during their first year of business school and beyond.


SmartStart is a program for first- and second-year students that supports the retention and success of underrepresented minority students via workshops, panels, and events. The program equips a diverse pool of leaders with the tools for academic, personal, and professional success. Aimed primarily at first-years, students take part in events that provide information on  co- and extracurricular opportunities, career development, leadership, entrepreneurship, and study abroad opportunities.

SmartStart is funded in part by the PwC INQuires program, which has provided funding to 52 universities across the United States to support diversity initiatives and applied research projects and to inform colleges and universities about updates and issues in the accounting profession.
