Dean Thomas Discusses Future of Business Education at D.C. Panel

Georgetown McDonough School of Business Dean David A. Thomas joined five other business school deans from regional universities to discuss the nuanced and dynamic relationship between business education and the needs of the workforce at a panel hosted by the Greater Washington Board of Trade on Oct. 29 at The Hamilton in Washington, D.C.

The panel, which Board of Trade President and CEO Jim Dinegar moderated, also included American University Kogod School of Business Interim Dean Erran Carmel, Howard University School of Business Dean Barron Harvey, George Washington University School of Business Dean Linda Livingstone, George Mason University School of Management Dean Sarah Nutter, and University of Maryland-College Park Robert H. Smith School of Business Dean Alexander Triantis. It is the most recent installment in the Board of Trade’s ongoing Business Workshop Series, which caters to both large and small firms who are looking to enhance their general performance and strengthen their bottom lines.

The panel discussed how well the Washington, D.C., area attracts business school students, noting the wide variety of industries that all interact and collaborate in the district.

“D.C. is a major hub for corporations, policy makers, regulators and NGOs,” Thomas said, noting that this diversity of nearby opportunities is attractive for prospective business school students.

More general topics included how business schools interact with the business community, the importance of internships for business school students, and what business leaders and human resources executives expect from graduates. Overall, the deans noted that students are interested in making an impact wherever they work.

“Business school students today have a much greater sense of wanting to find purpose in what they do,” Thomas said. “Employers should create meaningful experiences for young staff, and they will be inspired to work really hard.”
